The stressed sunnah prayers

Back to Chapter 6

These are prayers that the Prophet performed regularly and was keen not to miss.

1. The Dawn (Fajr) sunnah prayer: It is two rak`as before the fardh prayer. It is a strongly recommended sunnah and is to be rather brief.

2. The noon (Zuhr) sunnah prayer: Four rak`as (preferably, in two sets of two each) before and two rak`as after the fardh.

3. The sunset (Maghreb) sunnah prayer. It is two rak`as after the fardh.

4. The night (Isha) sunnah prayer. It is two rak`as after the fardh. It is preferred to allow a short time (used in supplication) between the fardh and sunnah prayers.

5. The "Witr" prayer and "Qunut": The "Witr" is a stressed sunnah prayer; its time is after performing the night (Isha) prayer until dawn. As commonly performed it is three rak`as in two sets: two rak`as and tasleem and then one rak`a and tasleem. It is customary to recite a certain supplication called Qunut after one stands up from bowing (ruk`u) in the third rak`a of the Witr prayer according to many jurists. Qunut supplication may also be recited, in case of calamities, in the last rak`a of any of the five daily fardh prayers and in a loud voice.
