Prayers in Special occasions

Back to Chapter 6

1. Prayers for penitence (Salat Ul-Taubah): Two rak`as performed and perfected in humility followed by supplications asking for God's forgiveness and mercy.

Who, when they have committed a shameful deed or have (other wise) sinned against themselves, remember God and pray that their sins be forgiven-for who but God could forgive sins.
The Quran: 3:135

2. Prayer to glorify and praise God: (Salat Ul Tasbeeh) The Prophet (pbuh) recommended that "one performs this prayer as many times as he can but at least once in a life time."16 It is four rak`as, in each, one recites the Al Fatiha and a chapter (surah) from the Quran. Then while standing one says; "Subhana Allah, Al Hamdulillah, La Ilaha illallah, wa Allahu Akbar" (Glory be to Allah, all praise is due to Allah, there is no God but Allah and Allah is greater "than any thing else") fifteen times. Then makes ruk`u and repeats the same ten times then stands up and repeats the same ten times, then prostrates and repeats them ten times, then sits, and repeats them ten times then prostrates again and repeats them ten times, then sits again and repeats them ten times for a total of seventy-five times in each of the four rak`as.

3. Prayer for a certain need (Salat Ul Haja) When one has a certain need and turns to God hoping for His mercy and bounty, he is to pray two rak`as as recommended by the prophet (pbuh). "He who performs wudu properly and then prays two rak`as. Allah will grant him what he asks, sooner or later." 17

4. Prayer for guidance to the right decision (Salat Ul Istikhara). When one has to choose between permissible alternatives, he is to thoroughly think the issues through. If still is not sure of the right choice, it is recommended that he prays two rak`as, which could be of the regular sunnah prayers. He recites some verses of the Quran after Al Fatiha then one praises Allah and sends salutations to the Prophet (pbuh) and then recites the following supplication:

Oh Allah, I ask for your guidance as you are the All-knowing, appeal to you to give me power, as you are omnipotent, and ask for your favor, for you know all the things unknown. Oh Allah, if you know that this matter (then he mentions the matter) is good for me in my life and in the hereafter then empower me to do it, make it easy for me and bless it. And if you know that it is not good for me, then keep it away from me and turn my heart off from it. Grant me what is good and make me content with it.

Thus one is leaving the choice to Allah and should do what his heart eventually tells him to do, and not what he would like to do.
