GLOSSARY

Adhan: The first call to prayer, announcing the arrival of prayer time.

Al Fatiha: The opening chapter of The Quran.

Asr Prayer: The after noon Prayer

Awra: The part of the body that should be covered.

Eid Prayer: A special prayer on the feast of breaking the fast at the end of Ramadan and on the feast of Sacrifice at the end of the Pilgrimage

Fajr Prayer: The dawn prayer.

Fardh (Prayers or Acts): Obligatory (Prayers or acts).

Hadith: The body of traditions based on what the Prophet (pbuh) said or did regarding various issues.

Ghusl: Total body wash as ritual purification from major impurities.

Imam: The leader of a congregational (or group) Prayer.

Iqamah: The second call to prayer. It is a call to the congregation to stand up and get ready to pray.

Isha Prayer: The night prayer.

Jama`ah Prayer: Congregational (or group) prayer.

Janaza Prayer: Funeral prayer.

Jumu`ah Prayer: The Friday prayer.

Khutba: Means a speech. It is given in the Friday and Eid prayers.

Maghreb Prayer: The sunset prayer.

Mandoob: Recommended Sunnah

Nawafil: Voluntary prayers, including sunnah and other prayers.

Qiblah: The direction of the Sacred Mosque in Makkah.

Qunut: Supplication commonly recited in the Witr prayer.

Rak`a: The unit of prayer, comprising a series of acts performed in a specific order.

Ruk`u: Bowing.

Salat: Prayer.

Sujood: Prostration.

Sunnah: The exemplary ways of the Prophet.

Sunnah (Prayers or acts): Voluntary prayers or acts that are performed in relation to obligatory prayers. They are encouraged by the Prophet (pbuh) but are not required.

Tahajjud: Later night prayer

Tahara: Purification from ritual impurities.

Takbir: Saying Allahu Akbar (Allah is greater "than anything else,").

Taraweeh: A special night prayer during the month of Ramadan.

Tashahud: Special Salutations and supplications recited during the first and the final sittings (at the end of the second and the final rak`as).

Tasleem: The concluding act of the prayer. One says Assalamu Alaikum. (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you).

Tyammum: Symbolic dry purification.

Wajib: Highly preferred sunnah. It is more than voluntary but still not an obligation

Witr Prayer: A voluntary prayer of three raka`s after the night prayer.

Wudu: Ablution for ritual purification from minor impurities.

Zuhr Prayer: The noon prayer.
